The largest market in the Derbyshire Dales and the only market town in the Peak District National Park, Bakewell has been holding markets since the early 14th century after being granted the right to hold a May Fair by Edward III. The current market, held on Market Street every Monday, has a wide variety of good including clothes, bed linen, shoes, fruit and veg, freshly baked bread, flowers, jewellery, wool, toys and hot food stands. When the market is not taking place, there is parking on the square, which is pay and display. The Old Market Hall fronts Market Street; now home to a very stylish tourist information centre, the building has fulfilled a number of community functions over the years, including a time as a wash-house.
