King Street is a charming little road running off the roundabout in the centre of the town and joining up with Church Street where you can find All Saints, Bakewell’s Parish Church. The fine variety of historic buildings gives the area an old world charm and an elegance reminiscent of a bygone age. With specialist shops for fine arts, antiques and luxury clothing, King Street is popular with discerning shoppers. One of the most notable buildings on King Street is the 18th century old town hall; now a store selling country clothes, it has been a courthouse, Lady Manners school, a fire station, a hospital for the poor and a fishmonger’s in its colourful past. Behind the Old Town Hall are the early 18th Century almshouses for St John’s Hospital.
